Paarse Vrijdag is held annual on the second Friday of December. It is the day to show your support for all sexualities, gender identities and -expressions. A day of great importance and a beautiful day to all feel more included and united. This year Paarse Vrijdag is organised on all schools across the nation for the first time. Because of this COC Nederland asked studio Pieter Jan Boterhoek to create an overall visual identity for the Paarse Vrijdag brand. The brand needed a solid and durable visual identity, to last several years and several campaigns.
The concept used for this identity is based on the theme of ‘shapeshifting’. A term originally coming from ancient mythology and folklore, modern day ‘shapeshifters’ can be seen as people who shape society, dare to push boundaries and think outside the box. A beautiful message and theme to work with. The result is a series of shapes (coming from the outlines of letters) and textures to create bold compositions and designs. Important for this identity was a series of animations used on the website. To emphasise the shapeshifting concept of the identity we created moving gifs in where the shapes and textures morph into - and move next to - each other.
The new websites serves as a portal for schools to end up at the homepage suitable for their application to the Purple Friday Campaign.
The overal result is a fresh and purple and above all playful new visual identity. With a vibrant and bold purple color palette to match, the visual language oozes spirituality and joy.
Next to a lot of online material some printed matters are designed and produced to distribute to all the participating primary schools. For all the schools an educational package is compiled including branded posters and workbooks, but also all kinds of (purple) craft supplies.
After working on a custom logo, a new typeface is created to use for the visual identity. The typeface can be found in different type treatments for all kinds of designs.
